Many of our newcomers ask themselves what their first week learning Spanish in Cusco at AMAUTA actually will be like. Charged with loads of excitement and ambition they are about to start an amazing adventure far away from home, and undoubtedly this life changing decision comes with plenty of uncertainties.

As the following testimonial of a recent Spanish student points out, you should not worry about the details and just leave the fun times up to us. The experienced staff of AMAUTA, the first Spanish School in Cusco, will do everything possible to make your stay as comfy as possible, and is always available to answer your questions before and after coming to Peru!

”During my first week of Spanish classes I took a placement test with the other new students. As I have an inherent anxiety for any type of exam, I was quite nervous for the outcome. Gladly, the exam turned out to be non-threatening, and I was pleased that the short conversation test was with a friendly professor who made me laugh and feel comfortable with my little knowledge of Spanish.

What to expect from your 1st week of learning Spanish in Cusco!

After the tests, we had a short break upstairs in the gorgeous sunny courtyard of the school’s premises, with a view of the majestic mountains surrounding Cusco in every direction you look. A member of AMAUTA´s sympathetic staff welcomed us with general info about the school and things to be aware of while enjoying all that the town has to offer. She also informed us about the free daily activities we could participate in. That was something I really didn’t expect as I assumed I would have to make up my free time with finding things to do. AMAUTA had something planned for my amusement every single evening of the week, as well as excursions over the weekend!

I indulged in all the activities AMAUTA had organized for us, and could not have asked for a better way to start my move to Peru off with a bang. I immediately made friends with the others in my class, all of us being from different countries, including Holland, Germany, Switzerland, England and Australia. On our first day we were invited to a welcome dinner prepared by AMAUTA’s own great chef. I tried my first Pisco Sour cocktail that evening, which instantly became my new drink of choice!

The rest of the week we continued with beginner exercises in our Spanish group classes. We focused on interactive conversations that were relevant to each of our lives, and were introduced to basic grammar rules and sentence structures. The classes were very extremely engaging and the school´s beautiful facilities truly made the classroom a home away from home. However, not all classes took place inside. One day we took a fieldtrip to the Almodena cemetery, which was a very enriching experience as we were able to see the differences in the ways our countries celebrate life and death. Another day we went to the local market to purchase a fruit juice, a great way to practice our newly acquired Spanish language skills.

After class my classmates and I would go out to explore the city and upon my return to my Peruvian host family, who were so incredibly caring and interested in my daily activities, I got ready again for the nightly festivities at AMAUTA. We prepared ‘Aji de Gallina’ in the cooking class, visited the adorable children at an orphanage in Cusco, watched the movie “Frida” and on Friday we kicked off the weekend by putting on our dancing shoes and learned how to salsa the night away, all in the first week!
